i went on VACATION. was so deep in veg mode that i hardly took any photos. oops. i even forgot to announce my artshow at grasshut on the blog. double oops. anyway, this entry is about my food binge that started last wednesday, february 1st.
birds are migrating!
i ate an exotic parsnip soup made by andrice, and a corned beef sandwich from QFC. QFC still looks like an auto repair center, at least from the outside. i had originally gone there to buy a toothbrush.
andrice's soup was ridiculously good. i should have looked for a better quality sandwich, no?
she also made me a bloody mary that had pickled beans! can't ever get enough of those!
soulfully tasty, no other way to say it.
i brought along my aeropress, and some Peets new guinea beans for it. i love my aeropress, i use it every day.
i ate a chicken rice dish from Nong's thai food stand. bwana ate it too, it was his idea. he also made me vanilla camomile tea which was wonderful.
i ate a burger with cheese that came on an english muffin. one of the best burgers i've ever had, no kidding. it was from a hole in the wall. i wish i caught the name. i was hanging art for the show and bwana just handed it to me.
i ate at the Bakery Bar with shawna and andrice. i ordered a biscuit lathered in pastrami, also yums. gonna go back there. the hashbrowns were okay. more crispy please.
i ate at Biwa with new babymouse friends. i tried shoyu grilled mochi, yum, aces. also, grilled pork belly, tsukemono, hiyoyako tofu, but not in that order. i tried a pleasant kakushigura shochu. for some reason i imagine portland to be expert tofuists, but no, san jose still leads on that front.
i had flourless chocolate cherry cake and macaron cookies and port at PIX. andrice ordered the cakes and i ordered the cookies. i think one was the chestnut whiskey macaron. we agreed that alcohol in pastries is good.
i ate at the Woodsman Tavern with craig and sierra <3. i had a bloody mary - a really good
one with nice ice - and a smoked trout with hollandaise dressing. potatoes here were
oily but their flavor was really good. sierra had corned beef hash and craig had something really high fat in content with a side of bacon.
we had yaquina bay oysters that were SO suprisingly good that i almost cried. they had pretty shells to boot. i regret not having taken a photo. sometimes that week's catch is the perfect one.
i ate at Foster Burger - the lamb
kind with beets. i forgot to tell them not to put an egg on top, because
i had eaten many eggs already on this trip. but it came so i ate it - over the top yums. also,
putine.
i ate nachos with that hot gooey cheese and chorizo, while watching the first half of the superbowl and petting a tall slim cat named diego. he was handsome.
i also ate some rosemary salted toasted skinless almonds.
i ate a burger with cheese and homemade tomato chutney and pickled zucchini at dave and hiromi's house. it was fun to watch dave make burgers. this was my third burger.
i ate a giant piece of homemade lemon curd pie by nancy. with cream and blueberries, it was DEE-licious.
andrice, sean and i drew plant critters for bwana
i made crepes for andrice and sean. i left one on too long while watching daryl hannah's performance art number from legal eagles. i ate that one.
everyone fixates on the 80s now
i ate at Pambiche. craig and i passed up on Olympic Provisions and hung out at the old haunt instead. cuban pork sandwich and fried plantains were satisfying, no doubt. drank dos equis and negro modelos from the bottle, ahhhh.
later we drank lagavulin single malt and pored over his sketchbooks and new stories. the man's got mad artistic skills, it makes me want to do better.
i had a large sapporo with agedashi tofu and a tamago finisher... at Mio sushi (?) i think that's where it was. jesse had yakisoba, andrice and brody had sushi. sean had curry on rice.
andrice made drinks back at the tiki bar basement. she made "dear mister saunders...." and other drinks with long names. my retention is vile poor! there was gin and more tomato, always high on my list.
i had to cut my vaycay short to go back home for work, but not before going on a sweets run.
andrice and i ended on a salted caramel apple pie, candied lemon pie and brandied peach
pie. we ate them with her homemade bergamot orange icecream. who needs breakfast when there's pie?
i got more from random order for folks back at home - banana cream and coconut cream. i hope it made it back okay, i haven't opened the box yet.
i got voodoo doughnuts - grape ape, mango tango, miami vice berry, and double bubble. thien says it's giving him and his colleagues sugar rush palpitations.
sean's pancho is the color of a voodoo dooghnut
i ate a BK big fish meal in roseburg. the lady told me to wait at a table, and she brought my meal to me. i couldn't imagine this happening in oakland! i felt far from home.
i also (lastly) ate a cardamom + seasalted pistachio brownie while driving back. i love cardamom but i don't like brownies, so it felt like a culinary draw.
i feel fat and happy
now it's back to salads, bananas and oatmeal. ta dah! ***
